Dining at Bar Helios
With Epic Universe and the surrounding areas all in different phases of opening, we got a chance to dine at the Bar Helios which is the bar on the top floor of the Helios hotel which has great views of Epic Universe. I was actually surprised how calm it was. Maybe the hotel isn’t running at 100% capacity but the bar at 7 o clock wasn’t very busy. We luckily got seated outside where there were many empty tables available, but the views were really cool. One of my favorite parts about Epic Universe is the different motion in the theme parks. The fountains were going and even had a show in the middle of our “dinner”. We could see the burning blade tavern. We could see the shells moving and coins shining in Nintendo World. We were able to see Stardust Racers whip around the theme park. It was an awesome viewpoint.
For our “dinner” we got two appetizers and an alcoholic beverage. For our drink we got the Nectar of the Gods which was $20 for a small drink. They loaded it up with rum but it was still a small drink, and the price point was not where it needed to be. Which was the story of the meal. Very good but ridiculously overpriced.
For our first appetizer we got the beef wagyu sliders for $26. You get two sliders on the plate, so it is $13 for each tiny burger. We have a nice burger place five minutes away from Epic called Bath’s Burger Bar and for $13 you can get a huge burger with similar tastes. These sliders were great. I was shocked by how good they were with my recency bias against dining on Universal property. I have been let down several times in a row but this flavor was excellent. Cooked correctly and our server let us know the medium rare cook temperature when we ordered, which was nice.
Our last small bites were the wings for $24. It came with six wings which runs a cost of $4 per wing. This had pomegranate seeds all over the plate and these wings delivered a pretty good smoky and sweet flavor. Once again, it shocked me for how good it was but the worst part about it was the price.
These small bites were both very strong appetizers and if they were cheaper I would absolutely go again. Unfortunately, the bill had to arrive, and it is just one of the most egregious bills I have gotten at a theme park restaurant. Two small bites and a drink for $89 after tip and taxes. This bill almost guarantees that I will not be back there. Which is a shame because the food is really good but at that price point, I will drive five minutes up the road to get a quality burger and eat it in my room.
