A Hard Budgeting Month for May

Updated: Jul 29

This month in budgeting May 2025

This is going to be the last month of no increased house payments. These payments start in June and with that month there will be a lot of struggles there. I get hit with a house payment and my apartment rent all in the same month. Let’s see how this month shook out.

After further research it turns out my month has been very lousy. I forgot about all of the different housing purchases to get the new house up and running. A U-haul, a new dresser, a new TV, several address changes, a renewed registration, and now, I am behind again. This is with $328.04 paying back to myself from credit card points. I feel like with June and July I will be getting supplemented by a new checking account welcome offer and some final payments on cruises will hit and supplement my income to carry me for this past month and for the next couple of months. Three paycheck month in August and by August I should have things CALM. My new expenses will level out and I can keep pushing until the Holidays. I also have a bunch of commission coming in September for a big cruise which will be nice to see. Welcome offers on credit cards and bank checking account welcome bonuses should float me. I was able to save $700 last month so can I borrow from that month to pay off my debt this month to say we saved $150 for both months?

I just need to hang tight these next two months. Try and lower expenses where I can. One obvious category that exploded was food with $628.60 in the month. This is about $300 over budget. This category was expanded due to the new house, had to refill our fridge and get everything going with toilet paper, paper towels, and other items.

The OTHER category was slammed with month specific expenses. Renewing licenses and registrations. Uhauls and new furniture. All of these smashed into over $700 in expenses. A similar number to the $700 pro-rated apartment rent for the next month.

Here are the categories

Housing: $1227.91

Entertainment: $530.11

Gas: $179.61

Other: $766.08

Tolls: $100

Groceries: $628.60

Combining into a total of: $3432.31

I brought in an income of $3041.68

Leading to an operating loss of $390.63

I had $700 of margin last month which looks like it will be supporting my next two months.

I still have items I WANT to buy for the house, but it looks like those will have to come later. I have other personal goals I need to hit.

If I can limit the damage in June with both housing payments hitting and other housing expenses to keep it running. I think I can have a good July. I should be making a combined $1500 of extra income in the summer months through commission and bonuses. This SHOULD lead to a great Fall. A Fall where I am able to save up on those personal goals. Maybe even do extra things to stir up more cash. I would like to hit my investment pool again. Unfortunately for me, I have a car to save up for, relationship milestones, and housing WANTS that I would like to have. So much to buy. So little income.
