The Best Places at Magic Kingdom to Hide From the Rain

Best places to hide from the rain at Magic Kingdom by land

A summer rainstorm in Florida can happen at any moment. It also typically goes away just as quickly as it comes. It can rain for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, and possibly the whole day, which doesn’t happen too often, especially in the Summer.

Earlier in life, I remember my family and I got stuck in a rainstorm at Universal, a HEAVY rainstorm. We could hop on and off and back on Men in Black so many times that a team member just showed us how not to have to walk all the way around and even gave us tips to do better. We did this for at least an hour due to the weather, and we had almost no wait at all. We were probably able to ride five or more times. Just on and off back-to-back. All to wait out the rain. Disney, Universal, or pretty much every theme park vacation price can be very expensive and very weather permitting. Roller coasters shut down, other outside attractions shut down, and the covered areas began to get packed in like gift shops. I don’t personally want to be standing in a gift shop for an hour waiting for the rain to stop, huddled close to hundreds of strangers also avoiding the rain. You want to enjoy your time at the parks because theme park time is finite. It is still possible to get enjoyment out of your park day even when it’s raining. I wrote a blog previously about the best attractions to get out of the heat, and for this Magic Kingdom list, there will be some similar attractions.

Also, I will be going land by land for the best ride to hide at.

The first land is probably my favorite place to be in a rainstorm and that is Tomorrowland. There are a few quick-service restaurants that you can hide at like Cosmic Rays and Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies (ice cream shop). The People Mover track can be above you at several points of the land, depending on the type of rain, because we do have angled rain here in Florida but the track could keep you a bit drier. There are so many indoor attractions that you can spend quite a bit of time in this one land. Buzz Lightyear, People Mover, Astro Orbiter, and Carousel of Progress all have outdoor queues. Space Mountain has an indoor queue but it is a short ride. The Carosel of Progress and the Laugh Floor are both longer than 10 minutes which sometimes is enough for the rain to end. (I am writing this outside, and it has started to rain.)

The Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor is my choice to hide from the storm. It is an over 10-minute show with a completely indoor queue. If Carousel of Progress was an indoor queue, it would be my selection because I enjoy the attraction more, but the outdoor queue makes it difficult.

Adventureland

Throw out Magic Carpets of Aladdin and Swiss Family Treehouse immediately. These are not the places you want to be in the rain. Depending on the rain angle and wait time, the Jungle Cruise could be fun in the rain. Really on the theme for the jungle, but if the Florida rain is misbehaving, this is one to avoid. The line has a big portion that is out in the open. The Tiki Room is a great option, with a covered queue and a runtime of over 10 minutes could be enough for the rain to let up. Another good option is Pirates of the Caribbean. A classic attraction that is eight and a half minutes long with a covered queue and mostly inside portions. It is also one of my favorite rides in the park, so this will be my pick for Adventureland. It is also across from a restaurant where you can cross under cover if the rain continues.

Frontierland

Not the place to be in a rainstorm. Thunder Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and Tom Sawyer Island all can close from lightning leaving this land in a state of paralysis anytime lightning comes with the rain. The queues are also mostly outside for these attractions along with sections of the ride. My pick for the best attraction away from the rain in this land is the Country Bear Jamboree. It has been recently updated in 2024 with the new show being 11 minutes long and an indoor waiting area. It is also the only indoor attraction in Frontierland so this one was easy.

Liberty Square

This is one of my favorite areas in the park. I have always been fascinated by American History and the Hall of Presidents is a GREAT way to hide from the rain. It is almost 25 minutes long and continuously runs throughout the day. If you run from the rain right in time as the doors close for the show and you don’t make it, that’s okay, the holding room has some interesting showcases and seats to wait in for the show to end. This is a perfect attraction to avoid the rain; a comfy air-conditioned theater show with some cool animatronics and showcasing the history of our nation is great for me. Other offerings in Liberty Square are several restaurants, shops and the Haunted Mansion has a decently covered queue with some of it being indoors. This land isn’t as good as Tomorrowland regarding the rain but still a decent option to be in the rain.

Fantasyland and Storybook Circus

These lands stretch out the most and are home to several Classic indoor attractions but the space between Small World and The Little Mermaid is very large and not much cover to hide from the rain. Small World is 10 minutes long with a covered queue. Similar with Peter Pan but the queue is usually much longer for a 2-minute ride. Little Mermaid and Winnie the Pooh have some outdoor waiting periods so I can’t choose these as the best to do in the rain. PhilharMagic is my choice to wait out a storm in. It is a fun show for the kiddos as it goes through the songs from Disney films. It is also close enough to Peter Pan and Small World that you could stay busy and indoors, MOSTLY, for a couple hours.

Preparing for the rain is a good idea in Central Florida, especially during the summer. These rainstorms can somehow pop out of nowhere and disappear just as quick. They do have wildly varying durations, so you need to prepare to not just stand in a gift shop and enjoy your vacation!
