Broke Does Disney: A Cheaper Alternative to Dole Whip

The Dole Whip of the most popular snacks at Walt Disney World found in a couple of places on property now but most people associate it with the Magic Kingdom. It comes in a multitude of varieties and when I was growing up, I loved the Dole Whip float which was vanilla or pineapple ice cream mixed with pineapple juice. So simple but so refreshing and on a hot central Florida day it is probably my favorite snack because who doesn’t love ice cream? My favorite is $6.99 for one. A regular Dole Whip cup is $5.99 and that is just pineapple soft serve. They also have a Pineapple Upside-Down Cake version for $6.99. All of these options can be found at Aloha Isle, which is in Adventureland, right next to the flying carpets. It usually has a line.

Question being? How close can we make it taste wise and how cheaply can we do it?

The first recipe I found is linked https://www.lovebakesgoodcakes.com/no-churn-pineapple-ice-cream/ It is to make ice cream with no ice cream maker and no churning. Just four simple ingredients and we can get it pretty close, a decent cheap alternative. Not incredible you can tell it’s a no churn ice cream. It’s really missing a little something you know. It is definitely quick and easy though.

16 oz Heavy whipping cream.  $3.37

14 oz Sweetened Condensed Milk $2.23

Pineapple or canned pineapple chunks $1.98

                   Vanilla extract $3.94

Total cost: $11.52

It yields quite a bit of ice cream.

You mix these four simple ingredients, and you stick it in the freezer for 8 hours and it comes out with a similar consistency as ice cream. It isn’t terrible tasting, but it feels like you cheated. Tastes more like frozen yogurt than ice cream. But you can make A LOT of ice cream with this recipe. I have probably more than a carton to eat or put in my floats.

            The floats are easy.

Canned or bottled pineapple juice $3.97

Vanilla or “homemade” ice cream $2.78

Total cost: $6.75

Just combine them and you got a float for cheap. This tastes much closer to the real thing than the homemade ice cream. It is so simple and easy and really good. You can also have plenty for the whole family for a minimum investment, quick and easy to make. This one was a winner. And I would just make it with vanilla ice cream. It mixes with the pineapple juice well and it takes me back to my childhood with the simple vanilla soft serve and pineapple juice at Aloha Isle.

You can also make a pretty good adult version if you pour a little rum in there if you get back to your hotel and the kids run you all over Disney. A refreshing beverage for sure. My favorite for this is Malibu but you can go with a dark rum if you would like. Disney does allow you to bring your own alcoholic beverages ONLY AT THE HOTEL.

DO NOT BRING IT TO THE PARKS! You will be turned away or pour it out and the whole purpose is to save some money. You can however bring the homemade ice cream or the float into the park with no issue. Just need to pack lots of cold packs or just have it at your resort. Either one works.

If you are a big pineapple float person like me than the float recipe is a winner. So easy and good and for $6.75 you can make them for the whole family with a bunch leftover. Enjoying this at the hotel would be the best though. Nothing better than a mid-park break with a Dole Whip Float for cheap.
